MIT researchers have developed a framework that incorporates limitations of current 3D printing hardware into the design process for more efficient and feasible 3D-printed concrete structures, aiming to reduce carbon emissions. By using topology optimization to find the strongest structure with the least material, they were able to design and load-test a 2.3-meter concrete bridge, showing that the printing hardware, not the concrete itself, limits the structure's weight.
