The Pine Point K-8 School on the White Earth Reservation in Minnesota has transformed into a 100% self-powered, resilient emergency shelter with a 500kW solar array and 2.76 MWh battery storage system, funded by the U.S. Department of Energy and the Tribal Solar Accelerator Fund. Despite funding challenges, the project succeeded in providing the community with a solar array and microgrid, prompting discussions about creating a tribal utility. The project not only focused on cost savings and energy resilience but also connected clean energy with indigenous culture and values, including a new energy curriculum for K-8 students. Celebrated as a modern extension of indigenous tradition, the Pine Point Resilience Hub serves as a critical resource during grid failures, providing electricity, heat, and kitchen services.
