Balcony solar panels are affordable, easy to install, and do not require permission from local utilities, making them accessible to renters and individuals previously excluded from domestic solar generation. The surge in popularity of balcony solar systems in Germany, with over 1 million systems registered, has been driven by the pandemic lockdown and escalating energy prices. While not entirely emission-free, balcony solar systems are practically emission-free during operation and are expected to contribute to Germany's goal of sourcing 80 percent of its electricity from renewable sources by 2030. Efforts are being made to address safety, legal, and training issues in order to further increase the benefits of balcony solar for users.
