Studies show that replacing short-haul flights with rail alternatives in Europe could lead to a reduction of up to 97% in emissions. Implementing broader policies to substitute rail for domestic flights under 500 miles could slash 40% of Europe's domestic aviation emissions and potentially reduce over 91 million tonnes of annual emissions globally. While some airlines are competing with rail lines, the transition to a lower-carbon aviation future is still in progress.
