EVs drive down China’s oil demand as Iran war slogs on

The use of electric vehicles in China has surpassed expectations, displacing 1.5 million barrels of oil a day in the second quarter of the year. This growth is expected to accelerate as the country faces oil supply disruptions due to the U.S.-led war against Iran. The International Energy Agency predicts a structural decline in demand for gasoline and diesel in China, the world's largest emitter of greenhouse gases, with a projected 4% decrease in oil demand from 2025 to 2027. Crisis-driven shifts like the Covid-19 pandemic are expected to have long-lasting impacts on oil demand in China.
