Researchers from the University of Michigan and the nonprofit ELICO Foundation have successfully provided clean water access to around 10,000 people and thousands of livestock in the Tanzanian villages of Esilalei and Oltukai. By implementing a solar-powered pumping system, they have expanded the local distribution network by about 10 miles, eliminating the dependence on fossil fuels or unreliable grid electricity. This infrastructure addresses the water access challenges faced by remote pastoral communities in Tanzania, where one in three Tanzanians lack access to improved water, with rural areas experiencing even higher rates of water scarcity.
