Chinese battery maker CATL unveiled a new modular battery platform for commercial vehicles at IAA Transportation 2026, offering up to 1,000 kilometers of range and megawatt-level charging. The TECTRANS II platform uses standardized battery packs that can be configured for different energy and payload requirements, supporting e-axle and central-drive systems. CATL estimates that the approach can cut commercial vehicle development cycles by about 50% and reduce research and development costs by 60% to 70%. The battery has a gravimetric energy density of 170 watt-hours per kilogram, allowing for increased payload capacity, and is designed for a service life of 12 years or 1.5 million kilometers. CATL is focusing on developing battery technology and infrastructure for electric freight vehicles, aiming to improve battery size, charging time, payload, and vehicle utilization for heavy trucks. This development could contribute to reducing emissions in the freight transportation sector by enabling electric trucks to cover longer routes and reduce recharge time.
