Sunday, December 28 2025 Climate Solutions Update

Xcel Energy is advancing its transition from fossil fuels at the Sherco Energy Hub in Minnesota by retiring all remaining coal plants and replacing them with renewable energy sources, including a large solar array and battery energy storage system. Notably, construction on the battery storage projects is scheduled to begin in 2026. This initiative also includes transitioning from gas power, underscoring Xcel’s commitment to a diversified energy mix that excludes coal. The incorporation of solar grazing, utilizing nearly 2,000 sheep, not only aids in the maintenance of the installations but also provides significant environmental benefits.

In parallel, Carrier Global Corporation is developing a 15-ton rooftop heat pump designed to decarbonize commercial buildings across the US. While the Energy Department’s programs are facilitating the development of next-generation heat pumps, it’s important to note that this specific heat pump is still under development and not yet available in the market. Innovations such as AtmosZero’s Boiler 2.0 and commercial heat pumps at the Belgium Brewing facility in Fort Collins, Colorado, are expected to be commercially available within two years, aiming to deliver zero-emission steam competitively, further advancing the shift towards sustainable energy solutions.
