Plans for the Whaleback Ridge wind farm project in Tasmania, proposed by Westcoast Renewable Energy, are currently under assessment for approval. The project could consist of up to 280 turbines with a generating capacity of up to 10 MW each, with the first phase expected to be between 288 and 432 MW. TasNetworks has confirmed capacity for the first phase on existing transmission lines, aiming to minimize environmental impacts and recording low bird species abundance. While conservation groups have raised concerns about the project's location in a biodiverse area, it is noted that the project will not directly impact the Western Tasmanian Aboriginal Cultural Landscape. The overall goal of the project is to help Tasmania achieve its Renewable Energy Target of 200% by 2040.
