The Australian Renewable Energy Agency is supporting a project at the University of Sydney to develop Si-perovskite tandem solar cells, which have achieved 30% efficiency on both small and large areas. The project aims to enhance solar energy conversion rates from 25% to a target of 40%. Unison Solar Energy is collaborating with the University and multiple Australian research institutions to establish gigawatt-scale production of these advanced solar products, as part of a $105.6 million funding initiative aimed at delivering affordable solar solutions.

In the Pacific, the Islands Forum is addressing the region’s heavy reliance on imported diesel for energy, which makes up 80% of its supply. Transitioning to renewable energy sources presents an opportunity to redirect approximately $700 million annually towards local economies and essential services. The region requires 2.2 gigawatts of new renewable generation capacity and 8,800 megawatt-hours of battery storage, with Tuvalu seeking international support to meet these needs.

Goldwind Australia has received approval for Australia’s first grid-scale wind-storage hybrid project, co-locating batteries with three-quarters of its wind turbines in New South Wales. The project will feature a 222.6 MW rated battery energy storage system with an installed capacity of 1,063 MWh. Additionally, the MV Yampu, the world’s first hybrid battery-powered bulk carrier, has commenced operations, aiming to operate on battery power 40% of the time and reduce diesel consumption by half a million liters, contributing to significant emissions reductions.
