In California, the Energy Commission has approved the Potentia-Viridi Battery Energy Storage System, a 400-megawatt facility designed to store excess solar electricity during the day and discharge it at night, thereby bolstering grid reliability while supporting renewable energy integration. This project aligns with Governor Newsom’s ongoing efforts to decarbonize the state’s energy grid.
In parallel, Graphyte, a startup backed by Bill Gates, is poised to launch a carbon-storage facility in Valemount, British Columbia, potentially operational as early as January 2027. The facility will utilize a method of compressing unusable organic matter into non-decomposable bricks for underground storage. This initiative, named “Project Red Cedar,” is expected to create 20 local jobs and has garnered support from the community and environmental oversight bodies. Furthermore, it is noted that Graphyte’s technology contributes to local job creation while addressing carbon emissions effectively.
